Everyone loves an underdog, and 2009 seemed to be the year for them. Several movies with lesser-known stars and/or low budgets held their own against their Goliath-sized counterparts, winning the hearts of fans and critics alike. Time will only tell if they can pull off a dark horse upset in awards season, but I'm willing to wager that a couple of these will at least earn mentions. Tell me, which is your favorite?

Post a CommentIt was between District 9 and 500 for me. But I had to go with 500. That movie was just too good.
I really liked Paranormal Activity, but I voted for 500 Days of Summer, just because that is a movie I can watch a million times over, whereas PA you can only watch so many times before the noises stop being scary.
I haven't seen any of them except for District 9, so that was it for me.
hurt locker and 500 days
It's between Precious and District 9 for me.
Had to go with The Hurt Locker, and it looks like it might be one of those dark horses in the running with it being listed as one of the top films of 2009 by Time Magazine, AFI, Associated Press, National Board of Review, New York Film Critics, among others, and it's 3 Golden Globe nominations.
500.
Precious is not a 'little' movie that could. Hello, Oprah and Tyler Perry! I know they're not the stars, but Mariah Carey, Monique and Lenny aren't exactly small names either.
i wanted to see 500 days but never managed that one. thank goodness for netflix - that's all i can say. i do think though that with all the hype lately that precious is going to be the winner here
Voted for Paranormal because that movie had no stars and a teeny tiny budget. But, 500 days of summer is GENIUS and one of my favorites.
I really loved the movie Sunshine Cleaning.
